Angry RETURN REJECTED- Please help!!! what is "qualifying non-dependent"

My tax return was rejected by the IRS. I had filed as single and entered my son as a "qualifying person non-dependent". My ex-husband and I share 50/50 custody of our son. My ex claimed him on his 2015 taxes.

I just want to be able to claim the thousands of dollars I paid in child care costs. Can I not do that if I can't claim my son?

Am I doing something wrong?
