Mortgage Interest Deductions - Married Filing Separate

For married filing separate returns, is it acceptable when itemizing deductions to claim 100% of the mortgage interest deduction on my wife's return, and 0% on my return? The mortgage is paid from a joint account. We do not live in a community property state.

Thank you.

Mortgage Interest Deductions - Married Filing Separate

Generally speaking there should not be any problems as the Spouse is making the mortgage deductions.

I would also a attach a note stating that you have given consent to your spouse to claim 100% of the mortgage interest on her tax return.

But, please be aware of the negative consequences of filing married filing separate on the tax return. At times the impact may have more negative consequences than desired.

Please review the following link below to determine if you might be affected advsersely in selecting this method of filing.

Are there any negative consequences of filing married filing separate?
