Did you try calling the IRS and speaking to an agent? You will be on hold for a long time (perhaps an hour) but I think it would be time well spent. If (and only if) you should end up agreeing with the IRS then look into what is called "injured spouse relief". By filing the forms for ingured spouse relief you would get the part of the refund attributed to your tax items (but not your wifes).
