Education credits

Hi all,

My wife attended school( for associate degree) from Jan 2010 to May 2012 (5 semesters). She got 1098-t for 2010 and 2011 but not 2012. Jackson Hewitt said we can claim education credit of 2012 too. Now I got a mail from IRS that the they could'nt verify with the school. My question is even she went to school from Jan to May on 2012 can't we claim education credits?

Any tips?

Thanks
Paras.

edu tax credits are used to reduce the amount of tax you owe to the IRS. Some tax credits are used to reduce your taxable income. .In fact, the IRS essentially doesn't even care about the reasons for amending a tax return as long as the changes you make fully comply with the tax law. Go ahead and file your amended return to claim the extra refund. She can get an education credit for some of her tuition and fees if she was not a dependent.Sh ehad be a student on at least a half-time basis to claim the deduction.
If your spouse was supposed to recieve a 1098-T you can acces it at
http://www.1098-t.com/

Three 1098Ts; 1098T is due to the payer by the end of January. Copy A is due to the IRS by the end of February each year If the school fails to properly furnish a 1098-T, then you may have to specifically request that it complete the form and send it to you .school does not have to file Form 1098-T if the student did not attend courses for academic credit
