Mileage/vehicle expenses for 2nd job

I work a second job part time (10 hrs/wk) taking disabled people out to run errands. I am reimbursed for the mileage I drive from when I pick up my client to the point I drop him off (40 cents/mile)

As I understand it, IRS Publication 463 says that I can claim the mileage I incur driving from my first job directly to my second job?

Am I eligible to deduct the miles I drive while on duty for this job on my taxes?

Thanks in advance!

“As I understand it, IRS Publication 463 says that I can claim the mileage I incur driving from my first job directly to my second job?”---->As long as you work both 1st and 2nd jobs on the same day, mileage from one job to the next is deductible as an EE business expense on Form 2106. Mileage allowance is 51 cents per mile for 2011, I guess and is included on schedule A of form 1040.UNLESS you itemize your deductions on Sch A of 1040, you can’t deduct your mileage/vehicle expenses.
“Am I eligible to deduct the miles I drive while on duty for this job on my taxes?”--->As described above as long as you itemize your deductions on Sch A of 1040.

Thanks for the quick reply!

I just wanted to clarify:
“Am I eligible to deduct the miles I drive while on duty for this job on my taxes?”

I'm eligible to claim the mileage on duty, even though my job reimburses me (about .40/mi) for mileage on the job?

“I'm eligible to claim the mileage on duty, even though my job reimburses me (about .40/mi) for mileage on the job?”--->It depends; under the non-accountable plan, amounts paid by your ER are income to the employee on W2 and must be included in wages with appropriate tax withholdings. And as long as you itemize your deductions on Sch A, you can deduct it on your return. If you do NOT itemize dedcutions on Sch A , you can’t deduct it. Under the accountable plan, EE travel/mileage expenses do not have to be treated as taxable income, so you can’t deduct it on your return.

Ah, ok. They're an accountable plan, from the look of my paystubs. Just as well...it'd be a pain to have them fax me back all of those mileage sheets.

Thanks again
