Question I accidentally filed in my maiden name!!

I always use the same online tax e-file site. When I logged in to input my information the site had my basic info already filled in. I forgot to change my last name to my now married name. My social security card reflects my married name. I also forgot to change the filing status, and filed as single. I am now married. What should I do now? Will I be audited? Will I be in trouble for this? I filed on Jan.18th and the IRS Where's My Refund says it cannot give any information on my refund status. Of course, there is problems with my return. Please help me!!! I am extremely worried!!

I live in Indiana

Since the social security card reflects your new married name, I am wondering whether or not the IRS rejected your E-File! I think the IRS would automatically reject your E-file due to the name change associated with your SSN. I think you will find the IRS will reject the filing of this tax return and you would have to resubmit the tax return with the correct last name.

Also, relax, this happens quite frequently and the IRS does not penalize or audit taxpayers as a result of this. I recommend that you check the filing status of your tax return, and you may find that the tax return has been rejected due to matching error of SSN# and your last name. If that is the case, you can resubmit/e-File the tax return with the correct information.

If the return has been accepted then I would simply wait for the refund and you can track the timing of the tax refund by clicking the following link below.

Question i should have been more clear...

Well, I would think the same thing. Except for the fact that I received an email stating that the IRS has accepted my return and also gave me a declaration number. Can the IRS accept at first and then reject after wards?? I am wondering if that is possible??

I don't think that the IRS would do that, it seems that they have accepted your tax return. Maybe it is the case where the Social Security has not updated their tax records. You might be in luck!!
