My child is 19, goes full time to a community college and also has a good job. He lives at home free, we paid tuition.
He filed his own taxes claiming 2 exemptions and that no-one can claim him as a dependent. (he has an investment and write offs)

We are getting ready to file our joint 1040 return and according to Turbo tax, we can also claim him as a dependent and can take the $4000.


It has a big financial impact on our return if we can not claim him, but I also don't want to flag the IRS. What should we do?

Possibly; even If your dependent is claimed on your tax return, he may still be required to file an income tax return of his own; so,in certain situations, your dependent could be required to file a tax; for 2016, if he is under 65 and not blind and gross income is more than $6300 or unearned income amt is more than $1050 then he needs to file his return as a dependent; however, aslongas he claims his own personal exemption then you can no t claim him as your dependent.
