Question question related to tax return on hold

I called IRS as to where my return was, the lady told me its on an 11 week hold, she was not able to find out why, but she said there will be a letter coming to tell me why soon, its been a week and no letter yet, however I think it might be from my student loan service reporting me on default a few weeks ago, I did recently graduated last May, and the I just called my student loan service and got a deferment, for hardship and no work as I live with my sister. My main question is can I call back the IRS and see if they can actually give me that return or am I out of luck and it is going straight to the loan service even though I just a deferment? I am in need as I am trying to get on disability too.
