Research grant and travel expenses

Hi,
I hope somebody could know an answer to my untypical question:

I did a research in European University for two weeks in Nov. 2013. This research is not for degree, because I have it already. It was kind of research grant which should be paid after a report submitted. I paid my travel and living expenses out-of-pocket. In 2014, I received the grant payment after I submitted a report for the research.

So, here are questions:
-Is this grant taxable ? (I guess it is, because it was not for earning a degree. On the other hand, the grant is like reimbursement of my travel expenses, but the amount is default)?
- Should I deduct my travel costs (for example plane tickets)?
- How to deal with the situation that my travel expenses are from 2013 and the grant pain in 2014?

Thanks

However, you do not need to include in gross income any amounts you receive for services that are required by the National Health Service Corps Scholarship Program or the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship and Financial Assistance Program

- Should I deduct my travel costs (for example plane tickets)?======== >>>>>>>>If your grant for research abroad is wholly taxable, you can deduct your ordinary and necessary business expenses. Ordinary and necessary business expenses include your away-from-home expenses ,i.e., travel, meals, and lodging if you are temporarily away from your tax home in theUS.

How to deal with the situation that my travel expenses are from 2013 and the grant pain in 2014?======>>>>>>>>>>you need to claim it when it is paid so in 2014 return.
