401k Distribution

I have a specific question. I retired early at 54 on January 1, 2009 and took a small early withdrawal from my company 401k in February 2009. I turned 55 in April 2009 so my question is, do I have to pay the 10% penalty. The wording is a little confusing about the rule of separation of service within the calendar year and when you turn 55 to avoid the penalty.
