Federal Return High, State Return Terribly Low

I have a question that maybe someone can answer. Last year we received roughly $1,000 from the State of Maine and roughly $4,000 from the Federal Government. This year the Federal Return was the same as last year and the State return is less then $50. Can anyone explain why? The only thing I changed in 2008 was I used to file single with the State and about halfway through the year changed it to Married. My Federal has always been married for many years now. My wife and I paid over $4,600 to the State of Maine in income taxes.
