HOH vs Single

can you please tell me why "Head of Household" only applies when there is a dependent involved? I am a single mom and only get to claim my daughter every other year. the off-year that I don't claim her, I must file as 'single' however, I'm the only one in my household. no one else is paying any of the bills. is there a way to file that would be more favorable ? thanks
