Local Tax Authority is Wrong

Hi All,

Apologies in advance if this is not the correct area for this question. My problem is that for 2012 my local taxing authority with my employer was wrong. I called them about midway through the year and they updated it, but not until January 2013.

The taxing authority they had me under for 2012 was from a previous same state residence and was a higher tax rate than the authority I am now listed at for 2013. In total, I overpaid about $300 on the year due to being listed under the wrong local tax authority. Is there any way to claim this money for 2012 or is it a lost cause? I have not filed my local taxes yet for 2012, although I have filed my federal and state taxes.

Thank You for any help

You need to file yur local taxes return for the refund. As you overpaid your taxes and are eligible for a refund, you must file a return to get the refund. You may still get a refund even if you don't file your return before the deadline, but you must file within the statute of limitations.SOL for local tax refund varied from state to state;for example, Taxpayers have 3½ years from the date the return was due to file and claim a refund in MN. For property tax refunds, the period is one year from the original return due date. Please Contact the taxing authority for more info in detail.
