Question Divorced & Living Overseas

Hi,

I'm an Australian citizen who married an American man. We both worked in the US (I worked on a Green Card). He insisted we file as a married couple & assured me he would 'take care' of the tax (because I knew nothing about the American system) - but he didn't. He didn't file with the state tax for 2yrs that I know of. I don't know if he filed with the IRS. It was a nightmare.

A couple of yrs ago, I left him & returned home to Australia where I got an Australian divorce (which is valid in California).

I'm never returning to the US.
The ex still lives in CA.

My questions are, who pays the back taxes to the CA State and/or the IRS if any are owing?

Will the relevant authorities just pursue the ex until all tax debt is settled? (ie: his, mine and ours?)

Or can they pursue me as well, even tho I don't live there?

Sorry to ask such tricky questions. Thank you for any responses and feedback. I really appreciate your help.
