State Return

Hello just did my state taxes and had the max taken out of my check $610.00 when I did my return it told me I was only getting $198.00, I was expecting more than this. I did not submit my taxes, as I think the state should be more.

You employer uses the information from your W4 to compute the amount of your incoem taxes, federal and state, to withhold from your wages. As you can see, you can communicate with your employer through W4. The number of withholding allowances claimed on your Form W4 MAY differ from the number of exemptions claimed on your tax retiurn. The process of determining the correct number of withholding allowancwes begins with the number of personal exemptions you expect to claim on your tax return. Then you can either increase or decrease this number based on your eligibility and desire for a higher paycheck or a a higher tax refund.

Thanks! I allowed my employer to take the max, I claimed zero on my w-4 for state and 2 for my federal. I did my taxes again and came up with the same number. I thought that if I had the company take more out throughout the year, I would get more back, or even half of what they took out.

Thanks for your response!

"if I had the company take more out throughout the year, I would get more back, or even half of what they took out."---> Agreed; in common sense, taxpayers badly need wise tax planning. As you know, many taxpayers look on tax refunds as a "bonus" or a stroke of luck at tax time. However, in reality getting tax refund m eans that you are giving the government a tax-free loan and depriving yourself of the value of the money. THis is why you need to wisely adjust your W4.
