Deduction for Volunteer Trip to Lourdes, France

i participated in a trip to Lourdes, France to help the sick. the trip was with a group of about 10 people and was not associated with any particular church or other organization here in the US.

we volunteered for the Lourdes Hospitalite in Lourdes.

airfare, lodging, food, etc. ran about $2000.

i would like to deduct some or all of these expenses...is this possible?

thank you.

You can’t deduct the expenses; You can deduct your contributions , your volunteering, only if you make them to a qualified organization, or when you travelled overseas to volunteer and you used a USA-based non-profit organization to get you there, then there is a good chance you can deduct part, or all, of your expenses, travel expenses and phone calls, postage, stationery, computer paper, and other out-of-pocket costs incurred with your volunteer work, on your tax returns. You will need a letter from the organization stating what you donated, your volunteering. Your volunteering is not considered a donation of goods, so it cannot be deducted from your taxes.
