How long must I keep my accounting and tax records etc?

I was trying to clean my basement and found a lot of prior year accounting records, bank statements, check stubs, cancelled checks, invoices, copies of last 10 years tax returns, w-2's etc.

I would like to know what the IRS rules and statutes say regarding keeping past records and tax returns.

Thanks a lot for your reply.
