W-2 Question

I received the W-2 from my employer. The local income/tax were not listed on the Federal copy or the State (IN) copy and only the Federal and Local income/tax were included on the Local copy.

Is this going to be a problem when filing the federal and state returns? Especially if I itemize for the Federal return.

I think that you should request your employer to send you the State W-2 copy which would have the amounts withheld for State and Local Income Taxes. Now, if your employer tells you that the W-2 sent to you is the correct W-2 to be used for the State tax returns, then it would mean that no State and Local income taxes have been withheld for 2009.

Clearly, an item of expense that is reported as part of the Itemized deductions on Schedule A is State income taxes paid in 2009. This means that your potential expenses on Schedule A would be lower, but it would not be a problem when you file your 2009 tax return as long as you have sufficient deductions that are greater than the standard deduction!
