upfront mortgage insurance premium tax deductible?

We paid an upfront MIP when closing on our house in 2009. We also pay a monthly premium. I would like to know if we can deduct the upfront MIP in one sum. The IRS website says that if you paid a lump sum towards future MIP payments, then you would have to divide that out by 84 months or the length of the mortgage whichever is shorter and you can claim that. However, my understanding is that the MIP upfront is not going towards future payments so it seems like I could deduct the upfront MIP in it's entirety plus add the monthly payments we've made as well.

Thanks for the help!
