Why is my return so low this year?

After calculating my taxes on several free sites I keep getting the same answer. I'm single, head of household parent of 1 child. I have dependant childcare costs of over $1000.00. My earnings for the year are under 33,000.
Last year my Fed return was $1200.00 and State was $600.00. This year my Fed is $634.00 and my state is $144.00. I live in CA and really thought that I would be getting back much more.
