Effects of paying 4th Quarter Taxes before 12/31 on AMT

I have read, but don't understand why it is a good idea to pay 4th quarter taxes after 12/31 so there is less of an affect on your AMT.

Can someone explain that to me?

I guess I want to know if one should or should not pay 4th quarter estimated taxes before or after 12/31.
