I have a teenager son working for a summer job (part time). He is not quite sure whether he would continue to work after the school starts or not...
I know that if he makes less than the standard deduction limit, he doesn't have to file a tax return.
Now my question is:
Assuming his total income is less than the limit for this year,
1. What happens at the end if he pays no tax on his paychecks?
2. What happens at the end if he pays too much tax?
If he doesn't file a tax return, basically he has no way to check for tax balance, right? To get some tax return, he has to file a tax return even if he doesn't have to?
I guess the basic question is what he needs to put down for the withholding without knowing whether he will make money more than or less than the limit...

If you're worried, I suggest just letting the allowance be 0, this way there are no issues. More than likely he will file a return if he overpays (1040EZ) and more than likely he won't underpay.
