No deduction taken on franchise fee

If client didn't amortize franchise fee for the 1st five years (10 year franchise term), what's the best alternative to recover? Amend last 3 years and lose the amortization on 1st two or would the IRS accept amortizing over the remaining life of the franchise agreement? Thank you,
