I received a letter from the IRS stating that I owed $176 due to a shared responsibility payment on my 2015 tax return.

I'm questioning whether or not it's right. In 2015 my wife was without insurance for two months. January and February. She got on the Marketplace Health Insurance for March - June and my company had an open enrollment and I put her on my insurance during the last of June and throughout the rest of the year. Long story short - she was only without insurance for 2 months, January and February.

I read that if you were without insurance for less than 3 months, you were exempt from the shared responsibility payment, is that correct?

Bonus question - after I paid the $176 I re-reviewed my 1040 and on line 38 it already showed in my calculations $176 for the shared responsibility payment. Did I just overpay twice?
