Red face Deceased Spouse - Sole Income from Caregiving

Hello--I originally filed for the October extension because I had just gotten finished with relocating from California to Oregon. My wife passed away back in June 2015 and the only income we received was from her disability SSI, and me being her caregiver through our county. I was told by the Soc.Sec in March that I would not need to claim her income because it was not taxable. First--is this accurate? Secondly, do I still file joint/married status and only claim my earnings as her caregiver?

This is my first jump into any fiscal filings--she was the one that handled it all in the family.

Thanks and I truly appreciate your time.
