disabilty tax issue!

my wife has been disabiled since Jan.2007, long term started april 2007, she applied for and recieved social security diability assitance December 2008. they sent her a check for $20,000.00 in the second week of December 2008 to reimberse her long term disabilty provider. She immediately let her long term provider she was approved, and mailed them the approvel letter. The long term provider let her know January 3, 2009 that she owed them $19,000.00, in which she sent them a check for. My question is , do we have to pay taxes on the $20,000.00 ? thanks for any advice!!!

For the majority of people, Social Security Disability benefits are not taxable. But if you have income addition to disability benefits then you have to pay taxes. If you or your spouse have another source of substantial income, it's likely your benefits could be taxed by the federal government. Visit Goldburd McCone LLP to solve your tax issue. You can visit 42 W 38th Street Suite 901 or call (212) 302-9400
