Different Distribution code

I do my Mother-In-Law's taxes each year. This year a NY Life pension 1099 that she normally gets each year was coded differnt than previous years.
Previously it was alway coded a 7 for normal distribution. This year is was coded a 4 for death. She did not die and her husband for which she gets the pension has been dead for 10 years. I was wondering was this a mistake on their part? and Does it make a difference between the 7 and 4?
Randy
