Amending my daughters return?

The I.R.S. has rejected my efiling stating that another taxpayer claimed my daughters ssn# as a dependent. She did this by mistake and her return has been processed and a check mailed. She used a online source to efile her return. Can she file a amended return thru any other efile source, such as turbo tax ? Do we have to wait until her check comes and return it by mail b4 filing a amended return. She was overpaid because of her claiming herself on the 1st filing. Of course our state taxes are in the same purgatory!...Please Help...and thanks....

I suggest that you approach a CPA or a qualified Tax Preparer, and have them amend your daughter's tax return. She will clearly have to pay back the some or perhaps all of her refund from both the Federal and the State returns.

Thereafter, I suggest that you paper file your tax return and perhaps attach some kind of documentation that perhaps addresses the fact that your daugher had inadvertently filed her tax return claiming her own exemption when in fact she should have reported that she was being claimed by her parent. This is a fairly common situation. There should be no problem in you being able to claim your daughter's exemption, only that it might take some time.

I would try and evaluate the cost of filing the amended tax return versus how much extra refund you would be entitled to receive if you were to claim your daughter on your tax return.
