non traditional household

me and my 7 yr old child has lived with my boyfriend for almost 3 yrs. he supports us 100%. i do not work. in the past, he has filed single with me and my son as dependents. i tried to get him to see if he could file as head of household with us as dependents, but being stubborn, he hasn't checked into it. he thinks because my son isn't a blood relative of his, then he can't claim him. we meet the requirements that i read about for a qualifying dependent. would this fall under the stepchild category even if we aren't married? the childs bio father lives in another state, we were never married, he doesn't pay child support, and he doesn't see his child. so, with my situation, can my boyfriend that supports us 100% claim head of household and claim us as dependents? thank you for your help.
