Consulting Payment and Expenses

I receive a $25,000 payment in December 2013 for consulting work I would perform beginning that month and through 2014. I paid taxes on the $25,000 in 2013. Can I deduct my expenses tied to that consulting payment in 2014 even though the payment was received in 2013?
