Question

How Years Back Can I File My State Taxes, If The State Owes Me? Because I Have W2's Dating Back To 2009. I Know There Will Be A Penalty But I Wanted Know How Far I Can Go Back In Years. I Know For Federal It Is Three Years You Can Go Back And File But I Wanted Know If It Was The Same For The State. Thank You In Advance.

#1;The SOL varies from state to state;you need to directly ontact the Dept of Rev of your state.

#2;as mentioned above;for fed refund request, the SOL is: the later of three years from the date of the original deadline of the tax return or two years from the date the tax was actually paid to claim a refund of overpaid taxes from the IRS. For example, your 2013 tax return is due on Apr 15th, 2014. Add three years to this filing deadline, and you have until Apr 15th, 2017, to file your 2013 tax return and still get a tax refund. If you file your 2013 return after Apr15th, 2017, then your refund expires. It goes away forever because the statute of limitations for claiming a refund has closed.
