Can you get taxed on an interview?

I have a friend who went on an interview with a "well known" company. As a result they just received notice that they are required to pay taxes on the interview process they incurred (hotel and airfair). Is this tactic legal??

I need more information on the actual circumstances. I have never heard of this tax on an interview. Perhaps you have missed some aspect of the situation, can you please elaborate on the circumstances of this situation.
