When to Pay 4th Quarter Estimated Taxes and Impact on AMT

I have been told NOT to pay my 4th Quarter Taxes until after the 1st of the year. I was told that if I do, I will owe more AMT than if I pay it after the 1st of the year... is this true? If so, can you explain?
