living abroad with low income

Hi,

I am a US citizen living abroad. My filling status is single with no dependents. I didn't file for the last few years because my income was very low.

Do I have to file?

What is the minimum income for filling requirements for 2017?

Do I have to file?=======> I should say it depends.

What is the minimum income for filling requirements for 2017?=========>>first you need to estimate value of your income overseas in $US, then, your gross income amt is less than $10400, no need to file your 2017 return with the IRS;however if you arer a self employer and the amt on Sch C of 1040 line 29/ 31 is $400 or exceeds $400 then you must your US return with IRS/your home state. If you are treated as a non resident of your home state then you do not need to fiel with your state.
note; Regardless of your gross income, you are generally required to file an income tax return if any of the following are true:You had unemployment income; You owe Alternative Minimum Tax( I do not think you worry about the AMT.);You owe additional taxes on a retirement plan (an individual retirement arrangement (IRA) or other tax-favored account) or health savings account; You must repay the 2008 Homebuyer Credit (or any other recapture taxes); You owe Social Security and Medicare taxes on unreported tip income; You received distributions from an MSA or Health Savings Account; You received an advance payment on the Premium Tax Credit.
