Unpaid wages settlement

Hello,
I'm getting ready to receive a settlement from a previous employer for unpaid wages. Said employer wants to settle in installments but I would prefer a lump sum. As far as taxes go, is one better than the other? Would I lose anything taking the lump sum? I'm in CA. Thank you.
