Can I prepare but not sign/send tax return if I don't have a power of attorney

My client sent a revocation of Power of Attorney but wants me to finish preparing the tax return since they paid for it already. They just want to be able to send it in on their own and not have me sign it.

Can I prepare a tax return without a POA?

You are legally responsible for a tax return you prepare it. all the appropriate documents need to be indeed properly signed. Generally, anyone preparing a return for a TP must sign it and include his/her PTIN in the space provided.

Why not prepare the clien'ts return correctly. Have them sign the IRS form saying they opt-out of e-filing. Have the client sign a statment they are responsable for mailing in the F1040. You sign the client's two hard copies of the 1040 (one for the client's record and one for the client to mail). What the client decides to do aftet that is up to them. The client can mail in the return you generated, get a second opinion, or make out their own return. It is their decision and you did your part by giving them a good return for the money they paid you.

No POA but you must sign on the return prepared by you NOT by them; It's normal practice to have the client and the tax preparer sign the tax return. Form 8879 is also signed by both party . You aren't required to sign the file copy. You aren't required to sign the client copy.
