Income Threshold for Independent Contractors?

I work for a non-profit organization that runs a kind of foreign exchange camp program every summer. All counselors are employed as independent contractors, and thus have to pay a hefty chunk in taxes when we file, and what I'm wondering is if there is a minimum amount of yearly income below which we are not required to pay taxes. For example, are we required to pay taxes if we make $300 or if we make $3000, or just if it's $3000, or is it something entirely different?

Thank you very much
