cashed in retirement early

I cashed in a retirement early. It was 8000.00. I paid in 2000.00 to make sure the taxes would be covered as well as a penalty. I got 6000.00. I cant figure out if I need to figure out the capital gains. I have not put any money into this account since 1999. My 1099-R gives me the gross and the amount of fed tax withheld.
