Ira For Lpn

Hi
My wife is a nurse and works independently. She receives a 1099 at the end of the year. So, there is no tax withheld during the year.
My question is that to save on taxes we want to put money in a retirement account like a 401(k)
I know she can not do that because she is not an employee.
SEP IRA seemed an option but someone told me that she can not use that.
I am very confused with this whole thing. Any ideas will be deeply appreciated.
Thanks
