Homebuer credit

ok sorry if this is lengthy..My father died in 2007 the name on the mortgage and the house did not change until 2008 to my sister and I but the mortgage was still in my dads name. In 2009 i purchased the home and everything was switched into my wife and i. now from everything ive read ive heard i cannot get it. But if im not qualified to get it how is it that i got a HUD and FHA loan an not qualify for the tax credit or am i misunderstanding that HUD an FHA are not just for first time home buyers and if it is just for first time buyers how did i get it an not be able to qualify for the tax???
