Unhappy Student Loan Forgiveness

Hello,

My mother passed last year. She borrowed for our college education via a federal loan (I believe it was a parent plus loan).

I have read in several online sources that since she died, the balance of the loan that was forgiven is not considered taxable income to the estate or her spouse. However, I cannot find backup to that on the IRS website.

Does anyone know the answer to this definitively and has citation of this?

Thank you in advance!

Sarah
