Mistakenly reported excess IRA contribution in 2010

I mistakenly reported an excess IRA contribution of $5000.00 in 2010.
I know that I can't amend after 3 years. However, since I continue to pay taxes on the mistaken $5000.00, how do I fix this?

I have already contributed to my 2017 IRA. Do I wait until 2018 and not contribute to an IRA so that there is no longer an excess contribution?

Thanks for any suggestions.
