Sales tax for online sales

I am going start using TaxJar.com for my web application to calculate the required sales tax for an order.

I notice on their sites API that there can sometimes be a State, City and County tax that are all different amounts.

My question is how are these taxes paid. Does there need to be a total for each tax point at the end of the year, so a total for every City, State and County? This seems too complicated so I am guessing totals are more general. What level of detail is required when submitting a yearly tax calculation.

This is for a Californian C-Corp.

Jenn from TaxJar here. We help you out with this as well. Long story short:

When you register for your California sales tax permit the California BOE will issue your number and a filing frequency. This will be either monthly, quarterly or annually depending on your sales volume.

From there, if you're using TaxJar's API you'll also have access to our reporting, where we'll break down your sales tax collected for you (on your platform and any other platforms on which you sell) and give you all the info you need to fill out California's sales tax return. Here's a blog post about California specifically:

I hope this has helped! If you have any other questions, you can also get in touch at [email protected]. Thanks!

Some of the 50 states allow cities, counties, and municipalities to levy their own separate individual income taxes in addition to state income taxes. These taxes vary widely across different types of local governments.
You need to contact CA BOE for more accurate info in detail. 1-800-400-7115

Actually I shouldn't have said this is for a Californian C-Corp as that only covers our subscriptions.

As we are a market place we need to provide our users with data they can use for submitting tax regardless of which state they are from.

So what I really need to know is what data should be stored for our users to be able to make a successful tax return.

On one hand I'm guessing it would be as straight forward as the user giving a location where the goods were sold to the tax authority then they would make the necessary calculations. With all things being correct that would tally with the tax calculated by TaxJar and everything would be fine.

However I have also read that tax may be applied depending on the destination of goods as well the source, does this also go down to a city level or how this that worked out. It seems that a user would have to submit totals for at least each state they have delivered to. Hopefully not totals down to a city level as that would be far too detailed.
