Do I need to amend state if I amend federal?

Hello,

I am amending my 2014 federal return because my wife and I mistakenly chose the wrong filing status. I filed head of household with our son and she filed single.

Anyway, I amended my federal return to married filing jointly but do I need to amend my state return as well? The liability to state is only changing a small amount (in my favor) and I really don't want to do the paperwork just to get an additional $70 back! Will federal automatically notify California of my new filing status?

Thanks!
John
