Cost Basis Liquidating stocks after death

Deceased had a simple living trust that we are now liquidating. What date can be used as cost basis when stock was purchased by the deceased over the years?
Date of death?
6 months after DOD?
Some have even said we can use the original date the deceased purchased the stock such as 8/1/2004 or 5/1/1987 as cost basis.
Thanks in advance
