Capital Gains on Stock Sale from Trust

As trustee, I sold stock in order to pay the beneficiaries (two received stock per their request). Is the basis for capital gains calculated from the date these stocks were put into the trust, the date the owner died, or the original dates of purchase (probably dating back 40 years or so)

Should those who received stock use the date of transfer as their new basis?
