Are landlords required to include advance rent paid by tenants are as rental income?

The IRS specifically defines that "advance rent" is any amount of rent that a landlord receives before the period that it covers.

Landlords are required to include advance rent in their rental income in the year it is received it regardless of the period covered or the method of accounting the landlord is employing for that particular tax year.
