Help - Wrong SSN on return

Odd Question:
After not receiving tax refund and not getting a "Where's my Refund" reply I checked my filing copy and saw that I entered my SS Number wrong. This was my first year using the PDF Form. I had no tax liability and asking for an extension didn't seem in scope as I owe no tax. I filed with a paper printout of the erroneous form

Should I simply correct and refile or will IRS backtrack the error. I stand to double-file? I would hate to topple the IRS on this simple error

And yes, my return to Ohio had the same "Off By One" error in the SSN

Any advice would be appreciated

orm. I had no tax liability and asking for an extension didn't seem in scope as I owe no tax. I filed with a paper printout of the erroneous form====>>Correct; as you owe no tax , you do not need to file 4868. You have three years to file your return for your refund. Filing an extension will have no affect on your ability to receive a refund, since the three-year limitation begins with your original due date. The purpose of filing 4868 with the IRS is to obtain more time to file your tax return. It does not extend the time you have to pay your income tax liability.

Should I simply correct and refile or will IRS backtrack the error. I stand to double-file? I would hate to topple the IRS on this simple error====>>>as you file your federal tax return with the wrong Social Security number, the irs may not be able to match it to your previous recordsMistakenly writing down the wrong SSN# on your tax return can prevent the IRS from giving you credit/refund for the return you filed/the payments you submitted..
if the only problem is that you put the wrong SSN on the form, you do not need to file an 1040x it can be fixed by a simple phone call.you may tri this by
calling 1-800-829-0922 and be prepared to give your child's full name, date of birth, and Social Security number

Or To fix the problem, you MAY file an amended tax return 1040X if you want.. The IRS allows you to file Form 1040X to correct existing tax returns for three years after the date you filed the original return or two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later

And yes, my return to Ohio had the same "Off By One" error in the SSN======>>>>>>>>>You may apply same way to your state.

Feds figured it out

Glad to see that I can be identified through other means. Received my refund today Apparently some human eyes and figuring was able to deduce the SSN error and get me my check. Can I infer from that that "All is forgiven" and that the oversight on my part was remedied? I'm taking that tack with a resolve to proofread my returns from here on.

Thanks to our host and moderator for the advice - I was poised to re-file and hope that the IRS wouldn't see that as a fraud attempt at double dipping. I can now apply my overpayment to much needed bill-paying! Best of luck and God's blessings to you and your work

i do not think so;however, they may review its policy of freezing hundreds of thousands of tax refunds suspected of fraud without notifying taxpayers. more than 1.6 million refunds have been delayed on suspicion of fraud.
