Is an S Corp Right for me?

Hi Guru,
I am currently working on starting a new business and I think a S corporation is the way to go. Will I still have to write myself a payroll check with an S corp? Is "pass through" taxing the same as if it were a sole proprietorship? Obviously, as a new business I will not be making a lot of money initially but I want the protection of a corporation. In the case of a lawsuit, can the officers be sued?
Is this the best way to go?
