Bank Issues 1099-INT with Wrong Name Last year, my mother cashed a savings bond in my late father's name. The bank screwed up and issued the 1099-INT in his name. She called the number on the 1099-INT and they told her it would have to be resolved at the local branch where it was cashed. The local bank official said that there was nothing he could do; she would need a tax accountant.
Although it doesn't say it's a law, IRS Pub. 505 suggests that it is the issuer's responsibility to send out corrected 1099-INT's to my mother and the IRS. Is this correct? I would like to get this fixed soon, so I can file my mother's 2013 return. I know what's it like to deal with the IRS and shouldn't have to when it's the bank's fault. |
